BIOGRAPHY
Germany-based South Korean soprano Seonwoo Lee has been acclaimed for her artistry, with Opera Canada praising her “phenomenal control” and Opera News calling her “a lyric soprano of extraordinary focus and clarity.”
A recent graduate of the Bayerische Staatsoper’s Opernstudio, she will appear in the 2025/26 season as Gilda in Rigoletto with Danish National Opera, an important step in her career.
She will also return to Munich, singing Minette in Henze’s The English Cat, and in spring 2026 creating the role of the First Courtier in the world premiere of Brett Dean’s Of One Blood.
Her two years in the Opernstudio were highlighted by her performance in the title role of Toshio Hosokawa’s Matsukaze. Other appearances included Oscar in Un Ballo in Maschera; Amanda in Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre conducted by Kent Nagano; Frasquita in Carmen; Papagena in Die Zauberflöte (while also covering the Queen of the Night); Giannetta in L’Elisir d’Amore; the First Blumenmädchen in Parsifal; a Priestess in Aida; and Mélantho in Fauré’s Pénélope under the baton of Susanna Mälkki. She also sang Gretel in a concert version of Hänsel und Gretel.
In 2023, she made her London debut as Le Feu and Le Rossignol in Ravel’s L’enfantet les sortilèges as well as La Fata Azzurra in Respighi’s La Bella dormente nel bosco, which marked the UK premiere of the opera.
She made her New York opera debut in 2021 as Proserpina in Rossi’s L’Orfeo at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater. Additional U.S. highlights include La Damoiselle élue at Alice Tully Hall under Barbara Hannigan, Lincoln Center’s “Restart Stages” with the Juilliard NOW series, and a Verdi Opera Gala with Korean National Opera. She holds an Artist Diploma from the Royal College of Music, a Master’s degree from The Juilliard School, and a Bachelor’s degree with high distinction from Seoul National University.
